Akwe:go
Akwe:go Progam
The Akwe:go Program has been specifically designed to provide comprehensive programming to Urban Aboriginal Children between the ages of 7-12.
The goal is to provide Urban Aboriginal Children with the support, tools and healthy activities which will build upon and foster their inherent ability to make healthy choices.
Five program objectives include:
- provision of social supports to address poverty-related self-esteem issues and peer pressure to engage in unhealthy behaviors;
- promotion of health and physical development to address inter-related health impacts of poverty, diabetes, and childhood obesity;
- outreach to children in care to increase support and culturally appropriate services to non-native adoptive and foster parents;
- form interventions or alternatives to institutional involvement (i.e., child welfare);
- support children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum disorder (FASD) and disabilities who are at-risk of additional challenges.
For each child, we will first do an in-house referral and intake process (including appropriate referrals for at-risk children).
Secondly, we will facilitate an individual needs assessment and a plan of action for each child targeting any needs that require assistance for the child as well for the parent/care-giver. We can accommodate up to 20 clients at a time and a waiting list will be provided to those who require our services. We encourage parents/care-givers to participate in the process in assisting your child to grow stronger, healthy and develop positive growth within the child's surroundings.
